Fully agree - I definately wouldn't use alcohol etc., there's a good chance that would weaken or discolour the coating.

The big Vaio stickers usually just come off without effort. The designed for Windows/Intel/Nvidia type stickers are a pain but I generally just ease them off and then roll off the inevitable goo left on the laptop with a thumb. I have never had the coating of the laptop come off while doing this but I reckon it's been a close run thing a couple of times.

If the drive isn't being detected in the bios then I would guess that you have a hardware problem. Since you've only had the notebook for seven months you should still be under warranty and should contact Vaio-Link for a warranty repair.

According to Vaio-Link, the Vista drivers should be available for the SZ3 around the end of March.

The 802.11g spec. only guarantees a maximum transfer speed of 11Mbps in ad-hoc mode and that will probably be pretty variable depending upon any encryption settings, distance, and environment etc. To get a faster speed you will probably need to use a wireless router and connect in infrastructure mode.

You're correct, the cables are just for the front A/V sockets. You can leave the Aver card installed, just don't set it up in Media Centre. You can then still use the front sockets in other Windows apps. if you ever need them.

Download ythe preinstalled utilities from Vaio-Link and install the following:

1 Sony Utilities
2 Sony Shared Library
3 Vaio Event Service

Once completed re-boot your vaio.

Usually, this error is caused by using media that the drive doesn't like. I would try a different make.

Your computer has two video cards - The Intel one is for long battery life (Stamina mode) the NVidia card is activated in Speed mode.

This is switchable see page 96 of your manual

I haven't heard of any way around this issue other than to use a different drive. You could try VLC Media Player but I'm pretty sure even that won't work with the Matshita 8XX drives. It's a versatile media player that will play a lot of media without any codec problems so at least you won't be wasting your time by installing it.

You could try this but if (as I suspect) you have a Matshita drive then there is really very little you can do. Sony now install optical drives that are very strict about obeying region coding - one of the hazards of buying from a computer manufacturer that has a big stake in film making . . . .

The input is really designed for recording purposes. Try using Windows Movie Maker to select the input. You will probably find that the results are disappointing with the Playstation.

The batteries on some notebooks do get pretty warm. I'm fairly sure that your model isn't one of the ones affected by the recall though. Have a look at this page if you want to double check.

Changing the hard disk will void the warranty but as you correctly surmise, it would be difficult for anyone to tell if you put the original drive back in . . . .

A faster hard drive shouldn't cause any overheating problems but you may get slightly less on battery time.

I would go straight for the 7200rpm drive.

Your computer has an i-link port, it's the same as firewire(IEEE1394) but has only 4 pins. You will need a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.

The only difference between the 4 pin and 6 pin firewire is that the 6 pin carries power but the 4 pin doesn't.

You could try getting a case from NextTronics in the US but they will ship worldwide.

It will be difficult to find a European supplier.
